Our ears are self-cleaning; there are two glands (sebaceous and ceruminous) that create ear wax (cerumen) which as well as protecting the eardrum from damage is lubricating and antibacterial.
The skin in our ears grows from the inside out, so old skin flakes off outside of the ear. Ear wax catches dead skin, hair and dirt in the ears and holds it, then when the jaw moves to chew food etc, the wax is moved towards the opening of the ear, taking all that captured junk with it.
Unfortunately, now people have a tendency to wear in-ear headphones, or poke inside the ear canal with cotton buds. This pushes the ear wax back further into the ear canal, causing a build up, and sometimes a blockage.
At Discretion Hearing Ltd Southport, our audiologist will inspect your ears thoroughly to ensure there are no underlying medical conditions that may be causing problems before using the latest microsuction procedure to remove any ear wax blockage.
Ear wax build up can lead to many symptoms including:
- Blocked or a feeling of fullness in the ears.
- Reduced hearing, difficulty understanding people etc
- Earache
- Dizziness
- Ringing in the ears (Tinnitus)
If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, book into Discretion Hearing Ltd Southport for a free hearing test.
